Overview

George Apley is the stuffy embodiment of old Boston tradition, suffocated and suffocating in ?propriety?. He belongs to all the right organizations, associates with all the right people, and is firmly loyal to his convictions ? that is, until he meets his children?s sweethearts. Will his son John and daughter Eleanor manage to break the shackles of family and tradition imposed by their elders? Or will they be crushed by the weight of their father?s absurd pretensions? Adapted from Marquand?s Pulitzer prize winning novel, the play is at once a brilliant social satire and a portrait of a family in crisis. This battle between the generations is punctuated by comic master George S. Kaufman?s famous wit and skill.
