Since 1993, under Evans’ guidance, TACT has grown to become one of New York City’s most respected not-for-profit theater companies. With its Concert Performance and Salon presentations (staged readings in a theatrical style developed with the company by Evans) and its Off-Broadway productions, TACT has unearthed and Evans has produced and/or directed over 150 forgotten or neglected plays, bringing many back to the canon of plays produced.  The company has garnered consistent critical praise and was named “Company of the Year” by The Wall Street Journal in January 2013 for the quality of its work: “Smart programming, superlative productions, a track record of consistent excellence: TACT is what Off-Broadway ought to be.”  Evans’s productions of Arthur Miller’s Incident at Vichy, T.S. Eliot’s The Cocktail Party and A.R. Gurney’s Children were among TACT’s most successful.  Other productions for TACT include: Home by David Storey, The Sea by Edward Bond, The Runner Stumbles by Milan Stitt, Three Men on a Horse by George Abbott & John Cecil Holm, Happy Birthday by Anita Loos, Beyond Therapy by Christopher Durang and Hard Love by Motti Lerner.  In 2002 Evans adapted and directed the US premiere of Noel Coward’s Long Island Sound and in 2004 conceived, co-wrote, and directed the world premiere of The Triangle Factory Fire Project – a devised work based on trial transcripts and first person accounts from the historic 1911 disaster.  The play has been published by Dramatists Play Services and continues to be presented in productions across the country.  More recently his adaptation of Oliver Goldsmith’s She Stoops to Conquer was seen Off-Broadway last season.

Evans launched TACT’s new play development program, newTACTics, in 2011.  Since its inception, newTACTics has presented 29 new plays in its annual New Play Festival, many of which have gone on to full productions in theatres across the country.  Most recently, Evans directed Ken Jones’ play Hollywood, Nebraska, which was developed by newTACTics in 2016, at the Wyoming Theatre Festival in Sheridan, WY and at the Actors Theatre of Indiana in Carmel, IN

In addition to his work with TACT, Evans wrote and directed the musical, Goose! Beyond the Nursery (3 Outer Critic Circle Award nominations including Best Off-Broadway Musical). Other recent NY Theatre: Joseph Hayden’s The Seven Last Words… (Chamber Music Society – Lincoln Center); She Stoops to Conquer, The Constant Wife (NYU Grad. Acting).

An experienced theater educator, Evans has led workshops and taught classes in acting, improvisation, text analysis, and performance across the county and in Canada.

Mr. Evans served for ten years as Artistic Director of the American Musicals Project (AMP), where he was instrumental in helping creating an academic curriculum in Social Studies and English Language Arts using American Musical masterworks and historic primary sources from the New-York Historical Society. Each April, from 1999 to 2007, he  produced and directed AMP’s an annual concert series celebrating great musical theater writers at the theatre at the NY Historical Society.   The popular series featuring Broadway headliners, musical theatre experts, and theatrical legends.
